Hennessey Venom GT
The arms race over who can make the fastest car on the planet has long been a two-horse race between the Bugatti Veyron and the Shelby SSC Ultimate Aero. But a new contender has emerged to take the illustrious crown: the Hennessey Venom GT.
The 1,200 bhp Venom has been clocked in at a bed-wetting 275 mph, pushing past the Veyron Super Sport’s 267.85 mph -- every decimal place counts, you know.
The $950,000 Venom is based upon the Lotus Exige but has had a complete overhaul both in engine and weight. Underneath the hood sits a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 that can transport passengers from 0-200 mph in under 15 seconds. The Veyron? Some four seconds behind. This is partly due to the car’s weight, which is just 2,685 lbs -- nearly half that of its rival.
Hennessey is only planning to make five of these a year, with two variations: the 725 bhp, priced $725,000, and the big daddy 1,200 bhp version. Four of these have already been snapped up, so if you want one for Christmas, you’d better start saving.
The Venom GT is based on the Lotus Exige, a lightweight midengined sports car.
