Enjoying Good Wine is both a national pastime and point of rural pride
Drinking is almost as much a part of Spanish culture as food. Wine is always served with main meals, and when drunk on its own is best enjoyed in a social setting with friends.
The country's regionalism also, in part, underpins the drinking tradition as the Spanish take pride in enjoying the produce of the vineyards that surround their villages and towns which compliments other local specialties that grace the dinner table.
Keeping it local
Many bodegas (wine cellars) and vineyards remain small--scale family businesses, ans, as a result, a fair proportion of wines don't travel far from their place of origin. Many of country's old school tapas bars and tabernas serve wines and sherries straight from the keg. All of which adds to the fact that place plays a key role in the quintessential Spanish experience -it would be almost to find many a combination of local wine and other parts Spain, let alone ion another country..
Drinking Fino or Amontillado sherry, or Manzanilla with tapas is common across the country and, once tried, is a habit that many a visitor takes home with them.
If you can't make is out on a wine tour, bodegas and wine bars serve a good range of whites, reds, cavas and sherries. In fact, many bodegas have their own bar where people can drink and then buy their favorite tipple by the bottle next door. Staff are knowledgeable--some are expert vinoligists--and enjoy giving pointers on what to drink to anyone who asks
