This weekend, the music industry lost an incomparable talent with the death of singer Whitney Houston, at the much-too-young age of 48. Here's a look back at her career and life in pictures.

Whitney Houston: The VoiceThe singer's vocal range spanned three octaves at the peak of her career.
Whitney Houston & Clive DavisClive Davis discovered Whitney at the age of 20 and mentored her for over 25 years.
Whitney Houston, “Whitney Houston”Her 1985 eponymous breakout album, Whitney Houston, debuted to moderate sales, but thanks to three consecutive number one singles, the album eventually hit number on on the Billboard Top 200 Chart in March 1986.
Whitney Houston At The Grammy AwardsWhitney Houston won Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "Saving All My Love For You."
Whitney Houston, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”The first single of her second album, Whitney, won Houston a Grammy and an American Music Award.
Whitney Houston, “So Emotional”The third single from Houston's second album,Whitney, "So Emotional" was the sixth straight number one song for the singer.
Whitney Houston & Bobby BrownThe couple married in 1992 and many blame Brown for Houston getting involved with drugs and alcohol. But in 2009, Houston told Oprah, "He was my drug," she said. "I didn't do anything without him. I wasn't getting high by myself. It was me and him together, and we were partners, and that's what my high was — him. He and I being together, and whatever we did, we did it together. No matter what, we did it together."
Whitney Houston & Dionne WarwickWhitney Houston's cousin and close confidant was Dionne Warwick. Aretha Frankin was her godmother.
Whitney Houston In “The Bodyguard”The 1992 movie wasn't particularly loved by critics, but fans went buts for the love story between a singer (Houston) and her bodyguard (Kevin Costner). The soundtrack for the film is the best-selling soundtrack of all time, due in part to the success of the single "I Will Always Love You."
Whitney Houston At The Super BowlWhitney Houston sang the National Anthem at the 1991 Super Bowl in Tampa.
Whitney Houston & Bobby BrownThe couple's marriage, which lasted 14 years, was passionate and tumultuous, to say the least. From a 2009 interview with Oprah Winfrey:
Oprah: Was he jealous of you?
Whitney: He's not going to like this, but yes.
Oprah: Then did you try to overcompensate?
Whitney: I tried to play down all the time. I did. I tried to play: "I'm Mrs. Brown, everybody. Don't call me Ms. Houston."
Oprah: You started to dim your own light?
Whitney: Yep. Sure did.****
Whitney Houston & Daughter Bobbi Kristina BrownHouston took daughter Bobbi Kristina to last year's pre-Grammy party hosted by Clive Davis. Bobbi Kris was born in 1994.
Mariah Carey & Whitney HoustonDespite rumors of a rivalry between the two diva singers, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey recorded the song "When You Believe" for the movie "The Prince of Egypt." The two performed the song together at the 1999 Academy Awards, where it took home Best Original Song.
Upon learning of her friend's death, Mariah Carey tweeted, "Heartbroken and in tears over the shocking death of my friend, the incomparable Ms. Whitney Houston. My heartfelt condolences to Whitney's family and to all her millions of fans throughout the world. She will never be forgotten as one of the greatest voices to ever grace the earth."
Whitney Houston & Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson's brother Jermaine produced some of Whitney's earliest and most popular songs.
Whitney Houston & Jordin SparksWhitney returned to the big screen for the movie "Sparkle," which is set to be released in August.
We first fell in love with Minka Kelly when she was shaking her pompons with Panther pride as head cheerleader Lyla Garrity on the epically underrated series Friday Night Lights. Kelly’s character has since graduated, but unfortunately her career has not. With all the tools of a leading lady (charisma, sex appeal and acting chops), Kelly has been stuck in Hollywood’s version of purgatory; a string of guest roles on mediocre shows, and an inability to transition to the big screen. Will her latest role on the TV remake of Charlie's Angels, which airs tonight, finally give her career the legs it's been looking for?
Minka Kelly Quote
" It blows my mind that anyone could be unkind to anyone. The guy clearing our plates is a person. I don't care if you're sweeping the floor. I don't care if you're cleaning my toilet."
90 points for Sex Appeal
There’s no denying that Minka Kelly is sexy. From her days as quarterback-kissing Lyla Garrity on Friday Night Lights, to her brief appearance as a light at the end of Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s tunnel in the indie smash (500) Days of Summer, Kelly has been igniting school boy crushes in men of all ages (go on, ask your dad). But much like her character in FNL, Kelly only goes for star athletes, in this case Derek Jeter, who began dating in 2008, although the couple recently called it quits.
65 points for Success
Minka Kelly’s career got off to a promising start when she landed a lead role in Peter Berg’s small screen adaptation of his big screen hit Friday Night Lights. The aspiring nurse and struggling actress suddenly found herself part of a young, talented, smoldering ensemble on a critically acclaimed show that no one watched.
After she left the show, Kelly’s career never picked up the steam that many had predicted, and save for bit parts in films like The Kingdom, (500) Days of Summer and the NBC series Parenthood, Kelly was almost as well known for being Derek Jeter’s girlfriend as she was for her acting career. Then, like an angel sent from heaven, Esquire magazine decided to name Kelly its “Sexiest Woman Alive” providing the actress with a flurry of press and name recognition along the way. With past cover girls that include Angelina Jolie, Scarlett Johansson and Kate Beckinsale, as well as her first big screen leading role in the thriller The Roommate, Minka Kelly’s road to superstardom just got a bit shorter. Did we mention she's also playing Eve French in the new TV series Charlie's Angels?
MINKA KELLY BIOGRAPHY As Lyla Garrity on Friday Night Lights, Minka Kelly was a picture of perfection: head cheerleader, dating the high school quarterback, born again Christian, and eventual college student. It was hard to believe that Kelly’s own upbringing didn’t somehow mirror her coming of age on the show. Well, not quite.
Kelly was born out of wedlock; her mother was an exotic dancer in Vegas and her father a sometime guitarist for Aerosmith. Kelly was raised by her mother in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and her childhood was, in her own words, “pretty rough” (Stinka Smelly rolls right off the tongue, doesn’t it?). But with the support of her mother -- with whom she was close -- Kelly graduated high school and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in show business.

What do you think makes a woman sexy?
The way she presents herself and the air she has about her. You can feel her power and her confidence. Also, the way she uses her ability to communicate, her brain and personality. I think that's really sexy because you all know the hottest woman can be the biggest bitch, and that's not cool.
As the late, great lead singer of Sublime Bradley Nowell once sang “Summer time and the living’s easy.” What makes the living easy (besides the weather, beaches, pools, barbecues, girls, and baseball)? How about the crazy good concerts and music festivals? There is nothing better than going to see a show on a nice summer day or night with a fun group of friends. Although in past years ticket prices have been rather outrageous, many artists are making changes to accommodate their fans in today’s tough economic times. I have put together a little guide to let you know about some great shows worth catching this summer. Check it out below!
Britney Spears and Nicki Minaj
Hmmm, can’t go wrong with these two pop powerhouses. The queen of teen pop has teamed up with the new queen of hip hop on what’s sure to be one of the most entertaining shows of the 2011 summer tour season. Both females have had strong years on the pop charts.
Britney is back, due to the success of her latest chart topper, “Femme Fatale” which put the singer back on the dance floor and pumping in our stereos.
Nicki Minaj, who appears on the remix to Britney’s “Till the World Ends,” had a huge 2010-2011 campaign in support of her debut album “Pink Friday.” This chick has the verbal game and the extended frame (You see that butt?) to make people stand up and take attention. Tickets prices range from $23.25-$103.25.
Rihanna and Cee-Lo Green
Ms. “Loud” teams up with one of the stars from NBC’s “The Voice” to create one of the more interesting hip-hop/R&B related tours this summer.
Rihanna is a full-fledged superstar. She continually turns out #1 singles and albums, and this year’s “Loud” is no different. Driven by hit singles “Only Girl (In the World),” “What’s My Name,” and “S&M,” this pop diva knows how to keep the crowd moving.
Cee-Lo has also had an amazing year, receiving tons of critical and commercial acclaim for his latest album, “The Lady Killer.” You know when Gwyneth Paltrow is covering your tune on national TV, you have made it. Hopefully these two will collaborate on a couple of songs during the show. Also B.o.B. and J.Cole are serving as the opening appetizers. Not too shabby. Ticket prices range from $25-$150.
Kings of Leon and Band of Horses
Talk about a great show. This is a rock fan’s dream. Kings of Leon and Band of Horses are two of the best bands making music today and are both incredibly on point live. I have had the pleasure of seeing both bands on separate occasions more than once and been blown away in the process.
The Kings are hitting the road in mostly amphitheaters this summer, for that outdoor chill vibe. They’re on the road supporting their 5th major album, “Come Around Sundown.”
Meanwhile Band of Horses will be along for the ride, winning over new fans who don’t know about them yet with every show. They are simply incredible. They will be supporting their third major label release, “Infinite Arms.” This is definitely a great show to check out. Ticket Prices range from $35-$85.
311 and Sublime
This would be the perfect fun, punk rock, stoner show in the late ’90s, but instead it has been reincarnated in 2011. These 2 party bands are teaming up for the Unity Tour.
311 is still trucking along, playing the classic jams that made you jump around from it feels like way back when. 311 has a new album called “Universal Pulse” which will be released in the middle of July. In the meantime, be ready to hear “Down,” “Come Original,” Amber,” “Beautiful Disaster,” and the rest of their catalog at their energetic and fun live show.
Along for 311’s musical party is Sublime with Rome, who has replaced Bradley Nowell with new artist Rome as singer of the group. Rome, who sounds incredibly close to Bradley, is a talented singer/songwriter. He, along with two founding members of Sublime, Bud Gaugh and Eric Wilson, have comprised this new group which will keep Sublime’s legacy alive as well as create the next chapter of the Sublime story. The band is hard at work on their debut album. Expect to hear songs from that release as well as endless punk-rock classics that you know and love from Sublime. Ticket Prices range from $30-$100.
U2′s 360 Tour with Interpol & Florence and the Machine
The mothership of all shows, U2’s 360 tour is back with its third and final leg. Dublin, Ireland’s own is playing the US through August. Although ticket prices are insane, they are bringing out some very cool special guests for this leg of the tour, including Florence and the Machine and Interpol. The theatrics of this show are out of this world…literally. I saw the first leg of the tour with Muse and was really blown away. At the core essence of it all is the fact that U2 is one of the greatest bands to ever live and to hear them continue to shine and actually sound better than they did when they were young is very impressive. Throw in Florence and Interpol and that’s just icing on the cake. The band is still touring behind 2010’s “No Line on the Horizon” album but expect a belly full of U2 classics to make you rock out all night long. Ticket Prices range from $40-$270.
Sade and John Legend
This should just be renamed the “sex” tour because when couples come home from this show, that’s all they’ll want to do, unless they are stuck in an hour’s worth of traffic leaving the venue. But in all seriousness, it doesn’t get too much better than this.
Sade has been one of the most consistently impressive artists over the last twenty years. She doesn’t rush out albums. She plays with unbelievable musicians. Her albums have like 10-12 songs tops, no skits, no fillers. She just makes quality music. Last year, she released “Soldier of Love,” another certified banger and is finally supporting this album along with her arsenal of hits in her first tour in over five years. Sade is an icon.
John Legend is multi-talented singer /songwriter who by himself is one of the leading faces in music today. He is the opening act in this production, so you know you are getting a treat when someone of his stature is the opening act. This will definitely be one of the best shows of the summer. Ticket Prices range from $60-$200.
GET YOUR FESTIVAL ON!
There is nothing better than spreading three days out in huge fields with thousands upon thousands of strangers dancing and getting dirty with true music lovers over a big summer festival. The summer festival season has really blossomed over the past five to eight years as the premiere summer experience to do. Instead of shelling out tons of dough to see your favorite bands at different points throughout the summer, you decide to put your money towards an event that embodies many of your favorite bands all at the same time. There are an impressive collection of festivals this summer. I will give you a brief preview of the ones worth traveling too. Remember, you may never get to see this great of an array of artists together in one place again. Check it out.
My Morning Jacket, Government Mule, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, The Avett Brothers, Michael Franti and Spearhead and others jam out in upstate New York.

Dave Matthews Band’s Caravan
(June 24th-26th, Atlantic City, July 8th-10th, Chicago, Aug 26th-28th, New York City, Sept 2nd-4th, Washington)
One thing you can expect every summer is the opportunity to see the Dave Matthews Band play live. This year they have switched things up a bit and having four 3 day festivals where they will be the headliner each night. They invited along some pretty cool friends to play at these shows as well. Festival acts include The Roots, Ray LaMontagne, David Gray, Dispatch, Flaming Lips, O.A.R., and many more. http://www.dmbcaravan.com/
(June 29th-July 3rd, July 5th-July 10th)
11 days, 11 stages, over 700 bands. That is tag line for this massive concert in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It would be foolish to list all of the acts on this gigantic concert, but I will list you a couple of the headliners. Kanye West, Peter Gabriel, Toby Keith, Girl Talk, Maroon 5, Ben Harper, Kid Rock, Black Keys, Florence and the Machine, O.A.R., Sugarland, 311, Britney Spears. Isn’t that enough?
Perry Farrell’s weekend staple of music returns to Grant Park in Chi-Town. You can’t go wrong at a Lollapalooza experience. Great music, fun people, sick dance tent, and everything you need in a three day party. Eminem, Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Muse, My Morning Jacket, Cee-Lo Green, A Perfect Circle, and many others will be performing.
Rock the Bells
(Aug 20th LA, Aug 27th San Francisco, Sept 3rd NY, Sept 10th, Boston)
Guerilla Union is back with an another addition of their annual hip hop powerhouse festival, Rock the Bells. The lineup is stacked and what’s great about this is it has artists doing their classic albums in their entirety. Lauren Hill doing “The Miseducation of Lauren Hill,” Nas performing “Illmatic,” Mobb Deep performing “The Infamous,” Mos Def and Talib Kweli performing “Black Star,” Raekwon and Ghostface performing “Only Built for a Cuban Linx,” Cypress Hill performing “Black Sunday,” and many more. http://www.rockthebells.net/
Austin City Limits
Technically the season of Fall doesn’t start until September 23rd, so I had to throw in Austin City Limits, which I think is the pinnacle of the festival season. Austin City Limits is celebrating its ten year anniversary this year and they are doing it in grand fashion. Kanye West, Stevie Wonder, Arcade Fire, Coldplay, My Morning Jacket, Fleet Foxes, Nas & Damian Marley, and a host of others.
WHY IS SHE FAMOUS
Even if Rihanna seems to have a bit of a stutter (ella, ella, eh eh eh) who wouldn't want to stand with her under her umbrella? Rihanna brought a little Caribbean heat to the summer of 2005 with the smash hit "Pon de Replay." She instantly caught the attention of the likes of Jay-Z and Sean Paul, and in 2007, when she released her third album, Good Girl Gone Bad, all signs indicated she would be a massive success. Her fourth studio album was released in November 2009, entitled Rated R, and it is Rihanna's highest selling debut in the U.S. yet.
"That was a moment for me because I used to be in that position. I would see a star and just beg for their autograph. And then for people to be asking me, I felt honored., on being mobbed by her fans."
83 SEX APPEAL
We love a girl with a voluptuous body, and Rihanna's dance skills demonstrate how flexible and limber she can be. She started hitting AskMen.com's Top 99 Women charts at the tender age of 18, coming in at No. 20 in 2007, No. 8 in 2008 and No. 8 in 2009. We could describe her sexiness all day, or you could Google her music video for "Rehab," featuring Justin Timberlake, and watch her roll around the hood of a red convertible in a green bikini and get an idea for yourself.
Rihanna's sudden and meteoric rise made American Idol hopefuls look like seasoned crooners who had spent a decade on the road before hitting the big time. A native of the island of Barbados, Rihanna lived an average life and barely even dreamed of show business before she was discovered in late 2003.
Despite her total lack of professional singing experience, Rihanna was snapped up by Def Jam, and had a hit with her single "Pon de Replay" in 2005. She quickly followed this up with the release of her debut album, Music of the Sun. Rihanna wasted no time in putting out a second album, A Girl Like Me, the following year, and her third album, Good Girl Gone Bad, took listeners by storm in 2007 with a slew of hit singles including "Umbrella" and "Don't Stop The Music."
Rihanna's instant success wasn't all luck, though. Her talent is undeniable, and her personality is determined yet appreciative. All it took was the perfect mix of circumstances, blended together like a good callaloo (one of Rihanna's favorite Caribbean dishes).
Robyn Rihanna Fenty was born in the parish of Saint Michael, Barbados, on February 20, 1988. Growing up, Rihanna led a relatively simple, average life on her island home. She attended Combermere, a kind of technical high school, and, despite having a natural singing talent, she didn't give much thought to performing -- aside from singing with her friends for fun.
At one point, though, Rihanna did enter a beauty and talent pageant at her school. Singing Mariah Carey's "Hero" as part of the talent component, Rihanna went on to win the competition. But that performance -- and singing in the shower or in front of the mirror -- was the extent of her musical experience before 2004.

When in doubt, girlfriend, seek refuge with your gays. Britney Spears is testing out the limits of her four hours of body shaping workout after three years of burger eating on the pages of Out magazine this month as the pop star seeks to return to hottie pop diva circles to help push sales of her new craptastic album and related music videos and live tour. How far has her comeback taken her? Well, she's getting there. There was a time that Britney owned a nice chunk of the sexy celebrity world; now, she's trying to eliminate some chunks and return to hottie-land. I'd cautiously estimate that she's 50% back. Enjoy.
