Formula 1 drivers always have first dibs on new innovations within automotive design -- flappy paddle gearboxes, computer-controlled suspension, carbon-fiber brakes. But the Mono could change all that.
This lightweight, ultra-high-performance, road-legal sports car brings all the things you’d normally find inside the cockpit of a Formula 1 car and makes them available for your daily trip to the shops. The single seater is constructed of high-strength carbon-fiber composite around a steel safety cell. So far, so Formula 1.
Underneath the driver’s central driving position is a 2.3-liter, 280 bhp engine designed by Cosworth (for those who don’t remember, they used to make Fords go very fast). The result is a 0-60 mph time of 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 170 mph. To put that into perspective, there are only six other road-legal cars in the world capable of accelerating quicker. It’s quicker than anything Ferrari, Lamborghini or McLaren can throw at it. Luxuries are thin on the ground as you can imagine, with the only non-racing additions coming in the “extreme” waterproof leather interior. But, to taste the thrill of Formula 1 driving -- all for $100,000 -- do you really care?
The Mono’s design is as close as you'll get on the rode to what you'd experience on the track. The central driving position allows for better weight distribution and also improves driver awareness
The exposed rear was a deliberate design addition to highlight the car’s racing credentials.
The low profile: perfect for racing, not so good for speed bumps.
The engine has been supplied by racing specialists Cosworth.
The tiny waist on the Mono keeps drag down to a minimum.
The exposed rear suspension and inner workings remind the driver that this isn’t a family saloon.
BAC chose to expose the dampeners to highlight the car’s high-performance design.
